Exploring My Creative Passions: A Peek into My Personal Hobbies

Hello, Creatives!

As an artist, my creativity doesn't stop at the studio door. I find inspiration in many aspects of my life, and my hobbies play a significant role in my artistic journey. Today, I'd like to share a bit about the activities that keep my creative spirit alive and thriving.

Nature Walks and Photography

A Breath of Fresh Air.

One of my favorite activities is exploring the great outdoors. Whether it's a hike through a dense forest or a stroll along a nearby beach, nature never fails to inspire me. I often bring my camera along to capture the beauty of the landscapes, plants, and wildlife I encounter. My favorite place to visit is the Environmental Interpretive Center at the University of Michigan Dearborn, which is open to the public. The photographs I capture serve as references for my nature-themed murals and other artworks, helping me bring a touch of realism and vibrancy to my pieces. I often bring my sketchbook or iPad, a blanket, snacks, and a variety of art supplies. I find a quiet spot to sit down and let my creativity flow, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings, the sounds of birds, and the gentle rustling of leaves.

Gardening

To Everything There is a Season.

Gardening is another hobby that deeply influences my art. Tending to my garden allows me to observe the intricate details of plants and flowers up close. The colors, textures, and patterns I see in my garden often find their way into my paintings and illustrations. Plus, there's something incredibly therapeutic about getting my hands dirty and nurturing life from the soil. My favorite plants to grow include a variety of fruits and vegetables (carrots, tomatoes, green peppers, and jalapenos) and native flowers (purple coneflower, columbine, and black-eyed susans).

Reading and Sketching

Read, Sketch, Read.

I love to unwind with a good book, especially one that expands my knowledge but also sparks my imagination. I keep a sketchbook handy to jot down any ideas or scenes that come to mind while reading. These sketches often evolve into more detailed artworks or serve as inspiration for future projects. Some of my favorite books include: The Midnight Library, The Secret Wisdom of Nature, and Keeping a Nature Journal.

Cooking and Baking

The Comfort of a Homemade Meal…

Believe it or not, cooking and baking are also creative outlets for me. Experimenting with new recipes and presenting dishes in an aesthetically pleasing way is a form of art in itself. The colors and compositions I create in the kitchen sometimes influence my approach to color palettes and design in my artwork. My most recent dish included a delicious beef tri-tip, with baked potatoes, cut carrots, and hand cut toast. My go-to dessert is most often No-Bake Cookies, yum!

Traveling

Maine Lobster Festival Anyone?

Whenever I get the chance, I love to travel and experience new places. Each place I visit offers a unique perspective and a wealth of inspiration. From the architecture and street art to the local flora and fauna, traveling broadens my artistic horizons and introduces me to new techniques and styles. I loved exploring the coast of Maine, learning about the “Lobstah Men”, visiting Acadia National Park, and taking the scenic drive back to Michigan… what an unforgettable experience that was.

These hobbies not only enrich my life but also enhance my art, allowing me to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to my work. I hope this glimpse into my personal interests gives you a better understanding of the passion and creativity that drive my art.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to sharing more of my artistic adventures with you!

All the best, Alexis Nicole.
